Yamaha FZ16 Vs Yamaha Fazer 150
Yamaha FZ16 Vs Yamaha Fazer 150
This is a tough one as both the products are from the same company. They are designed to conquer the roads in different manner. Unless you need a dirt bike to have power over hills, these beauties are made to swizzle over tarmac that is created for power machines. Both of them have the same engine but the overall performance delivered is quite different. Handling and power are very different from each other and this is what makes the FZ and the Fazer one of the best mid segment bikes in the Indian auto sector.

The costs of the bikes are different too. One goes in the touring section and the other goes in the racing section. It is up to you to decide which breed of bikes works for your style. Yamaha India has produced top notch machines for the economy segment, as these bikes are nothing but average performers with a hint of speed.

Speed, speed and more speed
As said though both the bikes are installed with the same engine the output generated is quite different. An amateur auto enthusiast might get confused since the engine capacity is same. The Fazer throttles up to the three digit mark in less time, but not as fast as the FZ. Fazer delivers a top whack of 110 to 115kmph speed. It can be achieved if power shifting is done. On the other hand the FZ reaches a top speed of 120kmph in no time. The reason for such a good performance is the engine and a lightweight body. The faring of the Fazer is heavy. The FZ does not have a fairing; it’s equipped with the headlamp directly.

Balancing act
The Fazer has a perfect name that is “Touring Spirit” the bike itself is superb on highways. The design of the bike ensures that you have a good time traveling long distances. The FZ on the other hand is a bit uncomfortable when it comes to long distance riding. The rider’s position on the bike is designed for short distance riding. There are chances of a backache being developed after long hours of curves and straights. If you wish to have a bike which can be used for long distance travel and which can give power in bed too the best option is the Fazer.

Mileage
The difference in the engine power can be felt easily since the Fazer is heavier than the FZ. The FZ delivers an average of 55kmpl without a problem. If you ride the vehicle in the economy zone, it delivers an average of 60kmpl that is quite decent. On the other hand, the Fazer delivers average of 45 to 55kmpl depending on riding conditions.

Time to go the ATM
In this situation, the engine is same, the difference is only in looks and feel. The best option is Fazer since it is very comfortable to ride in any given terrain. The FZ is not bad either but your back and other conditions are different in the FZ. Performance wise the FZ is a better option than Fazer since it is light weighted. If you wish to go for speed, the best option is the FZ. Cost difference between the bikes is not much either.

You know, I’d really appreciate someone writing a decent review that speaks about actual differences.

So far as I can tell, there is no difference in the seating posture of the two bikes. None!!

Yes, having the faring on the front will prevent wind from buffeting against you, but that doesn’t mean better riding posture!!

If the fazer has a different seat, then it’s a slightly different story. But I am not aware of any such claims either.

I read elsewhere that the Fazer comes with rear-disc, which doesn’t seem to be the case either.

In terms of handling, I read somewhere that the fazer’s engine is maybe tuned slightly differently. I am not sure of this claim either - the difference in handling could be because of the extra weight.

I only wish, the company clarified on some of these questions.

If it’s just for the faring then paying 8000 Rupees extra seems ridiculous.

Faring in Fazer doesnot mean comfort…….it just protectes the wind but their is not much difference in riding comfort for both bikes.

On speaking about acceleration….Fz16 stands tall with just 5seconds jumps to 80km/hr…..fazer taking lot more time……Also the over weight of fazer makes it difficuilt for curve rides…..Fz16 is comparitaviely Cousy…Fz 16 Rockzzzzzz

    Hello all,

since i just read this review i thought of adding my own two cents…the handelbar of teh fazer is completely diffrent form teh fz..whilst teh fz sports a slightly curved one teh fazer has a upswept handelbar…and teh seating is also reworked(technically)….u need to ride both bikes together only then one can understand.

    Hi guys,

Since i bought Fazer(red) i had many tours, for 1st 500KM there is a speed limit of 60km or 4500rpm and for 600KM to 1000KM the speed limit is 80KM or 6000rpm. After that the bike can work normally. I never felt any back ache while riding Fazer continuously. Its handlebar is quite different from FZ16 Or FZS, observe it by having both bikes side by side. The fairing of Fazer really blast the wind, in normal bikes you can feel the force of air while opposite vehicles cross u. you can’t find such forced air in fazer. Fazer has a unique feature that it stops the engine automatically if the bike crashes. For me its giving 55KM/lit if it rode in economy zone(35-60) and 40KM/lit in normal speed (60-75) In worst conditions it delivers 33KM/lit if speed above (80-100). The back tire of the bike holds the road effectively, you can lean very close to the road. Controlling is very effective in fazer, you can control the bike within seconds even though u were in high speed. I am fully satisfied with Fazer, it is fully made up with quality standards.
    thank you….

  11. Deepak responded on 11 May 2011 at 12:14 pm #

you can convert your fz16 to fazer, its cost lies between 7000 to 8000 and remember it adds 4kgs extra weight to your bike also effects your mileage but as per looks maximum looks on road will be on your bike..

  15. Shyam responded on 05 Jul 2011 at 8:53 am #

Go for the new FZS… its better in cutting curves ,better in pick, better in mileage compared with Fazer. if you really wish to get a sporty long ride look, but do not really care about the little variation in performance nd mileage, go for Fazer. i like the new white fazer! But if you wish to rush in the heavy traffic like a fast snake, get the FZs! it has the royal off road look!! remember, if u ever happened to get ur fairings damaged by any little crash, you can claim only the 40 percent of fiber fairings via insurance. but no need to worry about that in FZS. Fzs simply gives you an international fz series look! i always prefer yamaha! and now i personally recommend you the stunning FZs!!

    Hi Guys,
My suggestion is for you all to go the new fazer it gives u a mileage of 40-45 km per litre and the style attracts the most of them in the road.

I am fully satisfied with Fazer and most of all we are yamaha riders

  21. Lucky Luke responded on 23 Sep 2011 at 2:20 am #

    Hi all.
I own a Fazer, and have been able to ride along with FZ & FZ-S. Can’t say that this enabled any to do any comparison, so I can’t say anything but that it’s a matter of taste….and of fear for scratches (Fazer owners constant fear!).
What I am afraid of is is that nor the author of this report, neither any of the posters here ever did any comparison either, and I tend to deny the validity of their conclusions solely based on assumptions when reading the numbers, which numbers only differ by 4kg. on the weight of the bike. Then, to say that these four Kg. would impede the acceleration significantly, and moreover the speed and mileage does not make much sense to me. I would rather think - but as I say: this also is assumption - that the Fazer has better aerodynamics, giving slightly better top speed, mileage, and even acceleration with it’s capability to attain higher speed with the same power.
Who will be able to deny this with reliable figures and tests?
But yo will have already found the real truth: I love my Fazer ;-)

    Plzz….reply…..!!!!

  26. jon.bikez responded on 20 Oct 2011 at 4:47 am #

yes, you can convert your fz to fzs. you just had to replace the headlamp kit and need to get some green graphics as in fzs and some very slight changes in body. contact your yamaha dealer near to you.. they will do it for you and it might cost you around 2000….

  27. jon.bikez responded on 20 Oct 2011 at 4:58 am #

About the fazer and fz, it mostly depends on your tastee…. fz have an off road racing look whereas the fazer provides you with a touring and racing looks..

I prefer the fazer (only the black one) and ters a new limited edition with golden graphics which looks superbbbbbb.

engine and performance appears to be almost same with fz and fazer and to me the fazer looks better and is comfortable.. got some great sporty look, the riding posture is comfortable and gives more smoother handling with its front fairing and the little extra weight, we got the feel that we cruise through the road with little resistance….

  28. Geeks responded on 23 Oct 2011 at 4:23 pm #

Karthik’s right; save the cowl/fairing on the Fazer, there no differencesm design or technical (handle-bar included), between the FZ16 and the Fazer - as a matter of fact.

  29. raju ps responded on 20 Nov 2011 at 11:43 am #

Fairing on small bikes adds only weight (may be give better looks), but there won’t be any gain in acceleration or top speed. Aerodynamics with fairing on larger capacity super bikes does no doubt wonders in acceleration, top speed, handling etc.
