World Environmental Day-Pune Pedal Power

On the auspicious occasion of World Environment Day on 5th June 2010, Pune witnessed one of the biggest cycle rally, “Pune Pedal Power”. The event was organized by d5ision and Lifecycle. United Nations Environment Program launched the theme of “Many Species, One Planet, One Future” this year. Pune, the “Cycle City” of India, has the largest cycle track of 126 kilometers.

The rally started at 7.30 in the morning from S. P. College ground and ended at the Corinthians Club. Dignitaries including the Mayor of Pune city, Mr. Mohansingh Rajpal, flagged the event as well as joined the cyclists for a short time. The chief guest of this event was the chief of CME, Lt. General Sinha. Rally Marshall Lt. General Kapoor was leading the cycle rally on the electric motorcar along with other well-known personalities of the town.

All age group people participated in this cycle rally, Pune Pedal Power. The 12-kilometer track was having 3 checkpoints for distributing water for all participants. In the Corinthians Club, a healthy breakfast was organized for the participants, chief guests and volunteers to get relaxed. The breakfast was followed by a felicitation program for the chief guests and the sponsorers. Message given by the speaker of United Nation for this event was projected on the screen during the felicitation program.

The Janakalyan Blood Bank also laid down a blood donation camp for all the people present during this occasion. Lifecycle gave all the technical support to the Pune Pedal Power event. There were around 150 cycles, sponsored by Hercules cycles for all the members who were taking part in this event. Other sponsorers were Zensar Technologies, Pooja decors, etc. Not only the Puneites but also the young cadets of AFMC and CME actively participated in this program.

The Puneites cycled in this rally with great enthusiasm. After all the events, homage was paid to one of the great cyclist in this city, Late Homi Bathena. He lost his life in a road accident in 2007. Pune felt his absence on this memorable day. It is the duty of all Puneites to save the environment and live a pollution free life.
