Tata Motors Sell (Sail) Past Hyundai to Become No 2

Posted on July 3rd 2010

Welcome back!

tata1.jpgTake a bow! Tata Motors has overshadowed Hyundai as the nation’s second largest passenger vehicle maker in June, and is now behind only Maruti Suzuki, the numero uno car maker.

The major reason being held responsible for such a turnaround has been the increase in the substantial sales of Tata Nano. Tata has moved ahead of the Hyundai only because of the increase in sales.

Meanwhile, auto companies registered a considerable sales numbers in June, backed by ensuing demands for novel models and comfortable financing rates. To give a glimpse of the whole event, Maruti’s sales in the domestic market increased by 18% year-on-years at 72812 units.

Tata also witnessed robust sales mainly because of its Nano which was expected by auto buffs and industry experts.

Helped by 7704 units of Nano this June, vehicle volumes of Tata were on the rise by 63% with a total vehicles sell-out of 27811 units, which was more than Hyundai’s.

However, this is the not the first time it has happened. While only a month’s count of vehicles cannot be a criterion for the overall rankings, it is being speculated that the increase in the sales of Nano would help Tata Motors score over Hyundai regularly.

Others who saw demand remain strong was General Motors and Ford, both of whom are going strong on the back of new small cars they have launched. GM’s Beat compact and Ford’s Figo have ensured that the companies have a strong tempo in the domestic market.

Toyota and Mercedes were also among companies whose numbers remained strong in the month. Toyota, that is again opening bookings for its Fortuner SUV after clearing backlog, saw numbers going up 41.5% in June, while for Mercedes; the growth was a big 94%

An industry analyst was quoted as saying.

While the sales of Nano would be the USP of Tata Motors, it would be tempting to watch in the coming months as to what strategies are adopted by Hyundai to win its no 2 position back.

Since TML is planning to increase sale of NANO upto 30000 vehicles per month from 10000 vehicles per month at present, it can be a threat to number one position of MSIL in coming future.
