Production of new cars in Maruti Suzuki hit greatly
Posted on August 30th 2011Welcome back!
At the Manesar factory of Maruti Suzuki India LTD, production of new cars was hit when the company announced that it would only permit workers who accepted and signed a good conduct bond to work in the company, mentioning indiscipline and damage by workouts in the last 2 months during a strike in the month of June. Such move could even hit the new car’s production, the famous swift that has attained almost 85,000 bookings only within ten days after its launching even if Maruti executives told that the firm was in the probability to move its production to its Gurgaon Plant.
This fight could even curved into broad labor disaster in Gurgaon, Manesar belt in Haryana, which houses the factories of a number of auto companies with the president of the Haryana CTTU chapter of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions, Satbir Singh. Unions of a few other farms would even join the workers of Maruti for protesting against the action taken by the company.
The workers met on Monday evening with officials from CITU, the All India Trade Union Congress, another federation of unions, and representatives from the unions of Maruti Suzuki’s Gurgaon plant and a few other companies in the area. In the year 2009, workers in almost 60 factories went on strike to protest against the death of a worker who was working in Rico Auto Industries Ltd. However, Maruti Suzuki came out unharmed in the strike that hit several companies like Scooter India Pvt. Ltd, Sona Koyo Steering Systems Ltd and Lumax Industries Ltd. Really the industry is rolling under huge pressure from different factors. If it continues for long them then it will surely affect on the production as well as sales figures according to many Indian Automobile Manufacturers.
As mentioned above, workers had been asked to sign a bond of not to damage production. But workers denied signing on this bond and hence production on that day came to a halt. There was no production on that day according to Maruti Spokesperson. Because of the strike of workers, production fell to 1,085 cars a day. Before the strike, the production was almost 1,180. In the process, company suffered chronic production loss of almost 756 vehicles that bring financial loss of nearly 3 crore every day.
Secretary of the Maruti Suzuki, Shiv Kumar said the problems that Manesar union wants to be solved include inappropriate working conditions, problems related to wags and leaves, growing number of contract workers and inappropriate working conditions. Manesar factory of Maruti has a complete number of 2, 5000 workers out of which 40% workers are temporary workers.
Temporary workers work for a contractor hired by the company. According to the HR of the company, firms are appointing temporary workers increasingly to cut wage costs. Temporary workers are becoming conscious about their rights and demand for the similar working conditions as well as other advantages that regular workers get.
Maruti Suzuki has 4 assembly lines. Three assembly lines can be found in Gurgaon and one in Manesar. It is going set up 2 new assembly lines at Manesar plant.
