Almost after a 13-year break, Vespa has come back again. Piaggio vehicles revealed this brand of scooter at the Delhi Auto Expo 2012. Its first model will come in the month of April 2012. This scooter model will be a 125 cc gearless scooter model. Vespa was launched as the first scooter of the world in the year 1946. It continuously went on accomplishing huge sells up to 17 million units over almost 100 countries.
Vespa first appeared in India in the year 1986 as geared scooters that is built in joint venture with LML. However, during late nineties, LML-Piaggio brake up that led to the discontinuation of Vespa. Piaggio is very interested in placing the Vespa as a premium lifestyle product for people who want to make a style statement. Therefore, the price of this scooter will be more than Rs. 60,000 that will even mean that Vespa is going to enjoy an effective control with no other players in the segment.
Ravi Chopra, Chairman, and Managing Director, Piaggio Vehicles, is confident the Vespa will find many takers. “Our foray into the Indian market activates a whole new segment of style and fashion-conscious consumers who are looking for a premium, exclusive, lifestyle offering reflecting their personalities and attitudes. We would like to leverage this sizeable untapped market segment that shows tremendous potential for growth in the coming years.”
It has been decided that Vespa will be manufactured at Baramati facility of Piaggio that has a starting capacity of almost 1,50,000. However, the company is planning to increase capacity to 3,00,000 within first 6 months according to the demand for it. The new launching of Vespa will have a phased rollout. It will be launched in nearly 35 cities before going on actual sale in markets.

If the footboard space can be made flat like in other Japanese scooters, Vespa can really threaten other scooters. Scooters are generally bought by family person despite having lower average than bike of same capacities for some conveniences for family requirement. And flat space is very big convenience for some of the family requirements. Scooter buying catagory prefer conveniece over features. Can this message be forwarded to Vespa.
Thanking you.
