New 1.6 litre diesel engine revealed by Honda

By taking into consideration an increasing demand for diesel cars in India, Honda decided to introduce its new 1.6 litre diesel engine. Honda already developed a 2.2 litre i-CTDi four-cylinder diesel engine in the year 2003 in both the countries America and Europe for the Accord. This engine found its way under the hood of a number of other Honda models sold around different nations in the western world. In the year 2008 again, the Honda for meeting Euro 5 emissions norms introduces the I-DTEC version of 2.2 litre diesel engine. Now the Honda Company has introduced a 1.6 litre common rail I-DTEC engine at the Tokyo Motor Show. This is a turbocharged version of the old 2.2 unit.
The new diesel engine is introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show. In this engine, Honda uses plenty of aluminum. This new engine introduced by Honda is very light. The four-pot motor develops almost 120PS of power at 4000 rpm as well as 299Nm of torque at 2000 rpm. The new engine is rather good for a diesel such as SKYACTIVE 2.2 litre diesel engine of Mazda. This new engine also has good low-end grunt. Many Honda engineers are in full enthuse to work on a powerful 160PS version of the new 1.6 litre I-DTEC engine with 349 Nm of torque for replacing an existing 2.2 diesel unit in Europe. As this new 1-6 litre engine is bound to find its way under the hood of Honda City for India, it will surely help the mid-size Honda ramp up noticeably in the sales department bearing in mind an increasing demand for diesel cars in India. Furthermore, a downsized version of this new engine must be on the cards for both Brio and Honda Jazz to help Honda in getting a best chunk of the diesel hatchback markets share in India.
The plans for a diesel power plant for India this year are already fixed by Honda, when the Honda R&D Co (Automobile R&D Centre) Managing Officer, Chief Officer (Development Operations) Yasuhisa said, “We are aware of the petrol price increase in India but we consider that as a sign of growth in the Indian market… definitely we are currently developing diesel engine cars.” That comment has been cemented by the unveiling of the new 1.6 litre I-DTEC diesel engine.
