Maruti to Stop Selling M800 in 11 Cities from 2010
Posted on April 2nd 2009Welcome back!
Maruti Suzuki is planning to stop its 800 models’ sale from 11 cities that includes 4-metros, from 2010. It’s because of firmed emission norms. Mr. Bhargava (Maruti chairman) said that the company will also end selling Omni van where tighter Bharat Stage –IV norms will be enforced from 2010.

We will not be selling the M800 and Omni vans in the 11 major cities where BSIV norms set in from next year. However, this in no way means that we will discontinue or phase out the models, as these would continue to be sold in other cities and towns where BSIII norms would be applicable.
- Mr. Bhargava said. The cities where BS-IV norms will be implemented from April’10 are Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Bangalore, Kanpur, Surat, Ahmedabad and Agra. Remaining cities will come under the BS-III norms, allowing the companies to sell theircars. But, these will also appear under Bharat Stage-IV norms by 2015-2016, that will in conclusion mean phase-out of the 2 models.Mr. Bhargava said that the company had no intends to more invest in the engine modernization for Maruti 800/Omni.M800, that once used to be the bread-and-butter model for the company, has sold over 27 lakh units since its launch in 1983. However, with the cut in prices of Alto, the demand for the car had gone down, though it still averages 4000-5000 units monthly.

The first model from Maruti has given the Indian car industry a different dimension. It is one of the cutest car with a compact size. It used to be the little prince of the car industry. It is sad to know that the company has decided to phase it out.
