Maruti’s super seller premium hatchback Swift is up for a major overhaul. Swift was rolled out of Maruti’s garage for the first time in the year 2005 and has been a rage among the youth, owing to its sporty sub-compact. Maruti Dealers have started accepting bookings for the new model of Swift, the car has been codenamed as YP8 and the trials of it are on in the Manesar plant.

This B to B+ segment Hatchback sells close to 5000 units every month, Swift’s arrival had set the Indian hatchback segment on fire, with all the auto manufacturers vying to jump on the premium Hatchback bandwagon by launching their own models. In spite of multiple offerings in this segment, the popularity of Swift has never taken a beating.

Suzuki has unveiled the third-generation Swift in Hungary last year. The car comes with 1.2 Liter Petrol and 1.3 Liter Diesel variant in Europe; it has not yet been revealed by the company whether the Indian version will launch the same variant of Swift. The newer version of Swift would be comparatively larger than the present version. The car’s body is manufactured using Extensive higher strength steel, which makes the body shell stiffer and lighter. The 3rd generation Swift will have an improved design, lower fuel consumption, better safety measures, and environment-friendly Carbon dioxide levels, Suzuki had claimed prior to the launch of this vehicle.

The present version of Swift is available in diesel, petrol and CNG versions and it is priced in the range 3.9-5.5 lakh in India. The car’s closest competitors are Volkswagen Polo, Skoda Fabia, Fiat Punto, Nissan Micra, Hyundai i20 and recently launched Toyota Liva. The newer version of Swift is expected to further stagger the competition in this viciously competitive segment. French auto maker Renault has already unveiled its plans to launch a hatchback in India; this hatch back will be launched in January 2012, and it is being designed at Renault’s design centre in Mumbai to specifically cater to the need of the Indian customers.
