The Bharat Stage IV (BS-IV) norms will come in to force from 2010 in the country. The car manufacturers in India are preparing to meet these BS-IV norms and are developing their car models conforming with each norms. BS-IV norms may meet the standards of the Euro-IV. Regulations for the emission levels are similar for diesel and CNG under the Euro-IV norms.
By April 2010, BS-IV norms will come into force which will bring down emission levels. We are about four to six years behind the US and European norms. European manufacturers then had to fit an after-treatment device, which adds to the cost. Indians optimized the engine without adding such devisor affecting costs. Hence, it is better we stay behind European norms.
- Mr. Pawan Goenka, President, SIAM. Dilip Chenoy.
The models which are scheduled for their launch in 2009 and next are being checked according to the universal auto emission norms. Many car manufacturers are introducing universal models particularly in a small car segment.
SIAM is also in talk with state government to phase out vehicles that are over eight years old instead of 15 year old vehicles as they contribute almost 80 % pollution in the city area.

Q1> Other than Maruti Suzuki Ritz, is there any other car in the Indian market that is BS 4 certified?
Q2> Maruti Suzuki A-star, I am told, also conforms to BS 4 norms. Is it certified already?
Q3> For all the car models that is now in existence, would they be phased out or would they be upgraded to meet Euro 4?
