Fiat Rally Catches the Eyes

Pune witnessed a grand rally organized by Fiat India on December 03, 2010. The starting point of the rally was the Vits hotel located close to the Balewadi Sports Complex. The rally went all the way to the Ranjangaon plant of the company. Here the company officials greeted the customers with a warm welcome and then the customers were treated with a visit to the company’s plant.
Friday morning enjoyed a pleasant climate with temperature dipping down and also the sun shining. As many 125 ardent fiat fans made their way early morning to become the part of the rally. 60 cars came from different metropolises in the country like New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Coimbatore and Chennai. Car fans came to converge and show their love for their cars and also for the Italian brand. It was indeed a grand occasion.
Rajeev Kapoor, President and CEO, Fiat India Automobiles, headed off to Fiat’s Ranjangaon Plant flagged off the rally. Addressing the occasion he said,
“We at Fiat, are extremely happy to see all the Fiat fans come together. It is our pleasure to be a part of this occasion. The turn out today reflects the love and trust Fiat commands and we hope that this continues. We hope to build on this affection to take Fiat to scaling new heights in the coming days”
Quite a few interesting mod-jobs here caught the eyes at the Rally. The chief attraction, however, was a red colored Punto, with its bonnet adorned in black graphics, a well designed, subtle and still sport body kit applied, and an amazingly sounding FOCAL music system using the boot space very well and providing the much needed music.

Inspite of all that FIAT is still not a good brand. For 40 years all taxis in Bombay and Poona roads were FIATS. The first model Fiat India Auto Ltd made at its Kurla plant the Uno was a disaster. Service was non existant , parts were impossible to find Only Italians with their national trait of bungling could do that. Today the company survives by making TATA cars at Ranjangaon. I will not touch a FIAT even if it came filled with Rs 1,000 currency notes.

recently, our family purchased a FIAT Grande Punto 90 HP at a price close to 8 lacs. This is a superior model to the base model fitted with 75 HP engine and we paid a premium of 50000 rupees. Both engines have the same CC capacity. So I wondered whether FIAT gave us really the 90 HP power train or we got fooled. the pick up of the 90 hp engine was poorer in and around town as compared to the 75 HP model. I escalated the matter to Vice President Power Train, Mr. Gurpratap Boparai. He sent a team of experts from their power train division and from Turbo charger company which incidentally is made in chennai. the conclusion after the in depth study is 90 HP engine has poorer performance in drives within town but better performance at speeds over 120 km/hour as compared to that of 75 HP Punto. In the Indian Scenario, the roads, highways and poor traffic discipline/ high traffic hazards do not allow you to drive safely at speeds anywhere near 120kmph let alone above 120 kmph. therefore 90Hp model’s superior performance at speeds above 120 km ph is irrelevant for India. What is relevant is pick up and performance in drives within town which is worse than the 75 Hp model. in summary, the consumer is worse off by buying 90 HP model at a premium of 50000 rupees. being an engineer I proposed to Boparai a solution which would improve the performance of 90 HP Punto at low speeds. he declined the proposal as their hands are tied with their principals sitting in italy.
What is interesting is Maruti Suzuki in their SX4 using same FIAT 90Hp engine as in PUNTO but with SUZUKI’s own engine management unit which is the computerized control system for the engine have licked this problem. I believe FIAT is defrauding the Indian Consumer by marketing 90hp punto without disclosing all these deficiencies at the time of sale. Autocare india will be doing yeoman service if they promulgate this info to indian consumers who belong to the informed automotive owners segment of the indian population.
