BMW Plans to Launch its Mini Car in 2012
Posted on October 18th 2011Welcome back!

BMW, the German auto giant has announced that it plans to launch Mini in India next year. Mini is a small car and is expected to be priced more than 25 lakh. BMW India president Andreas Schaaf said, “I am pleased to announce that the Mini will be introduced in India in 2012. Currently, the BMW team is evaluating which version to be launched in India from the entire Mini family.”
The auto major plans to set up new showrooms exclusively for the brand, across the nation and also plans to have not more than 12 dealerships. Schaaf remarked that “As a first step, we will have two dealerships in Delhi and one in Mumbai. In total, we will have 12 dealerships across the country in the coming years. As per plans, in 2013 we will add 3-4 dealers followed by 3 more dealerships in 2014.”
The model would be completely built abroad and then imported in India. BMW had planned to launch Mini in 2009 but was unable to do so because it was not feasible then. Schaaf remarked that the price of the car has not been finalized. But he said that as Mini was a premium car and that too of a premium brand, its introductory price is expected to be more than 25 lakh.
Mini is one of the most sought after small cars across the world and India is one of the few countries where it has not been introduced. The auto major is quite confident that Mini will be quite successful in the Indian market. Although the company has decided the price of Mini, it has not yet finalized the version of this small car, from the entire fleet of Mini.
The car will be available in both diesel and petrol variants and will have a very powerful engine. It will be introduced in a market where there are not many takers of small luxury cars. This has been evident from the sales figures of Fiat 500 and Volkswagen Beetle. Schaaf said that they plan to market Mini as a sporty car that has “iconic value”. It will also have “high levels of customization” in order to compete in the Indian market where the car sales have declined significantly in the past few months. However, Schaaf is confident that the Indian market is now fit for small luxury cars.
