Bajaj Pulsar 180cc Vs Yamaha FZ 16
Posted on April 13th 2010If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

You cannot expect economy from the Pulsar brand especially the 180cc model. What you can expect is unmatched speed which crushes the same engine which was on comparison before. The 180cc engine ensures you reach the three digit mark in less time and have a top end which is more than the Yamaha.

The Pulsar reaches a top whack of 125kmph if power shifting is done. If you are cruising around 5000rpm the bike will reach 115kmph. On the other hand the FZ reaches a top whack of 120kmph. Cruising around 5000rpm you will reach a speed of 110kmph. Speed is the section which is devoted to the Pulsar which has good pick up. You can tune the FZ to go faster round corners since it has a wide rear tire. The Pulsar has a grunty pick up which is felt when pinning the throttle. You can experience the jerk when you increase the speed. Throttling to three digit mark takes less time as the engine is quite refined from the old one. The new 180cc engine delivers more power than the FZ any time. Features wise the FZ has more science involved than the pulsar. It shows Yamaha to be on safer side when it comes to features. Handling the FZ is easier as the engine does not throttle up to quick speeds like the Pulsar. The overall handling and structure of the Pulsar is simple superb.Balancing act
This is where all the Pulsars go down. Handling the 180cc monster is bit difficult in heavy traffic. When you wish to travel on a busy street the riding posture is not that great with the Pulsar. Clip on handle bars do not work that efficiently as they should be working. The FZ on the other hand has wide bars which ensure comfort while riding in city or rough terrain. Cornering the FZ is very easy since it has a handle bar and a wide tire. All of these flashing parts start making sense while riding the bike at red line gear change. The wide rear tire helps a lot when it comes to riding in wet conditions. The design of the tire is done specially for Indian roads.
Mileage
As said the 180cc performs well in terms of speed, the FZ delivers better average. The only reason for increased average is due to its engine capacity. Having a 150cc engine has less power and more average. The FZ delivers an outstanding average of 40kmpl which is decent than Pulsar 180cc. The Pulsar has the capability to deliver an average of 40kmpl but the real numbers are 35 and 30kmpl.
Time to go to the ATM
This is not a tough choice as the decision lies in looks. Both the vehicles are same in numbers. The difference is only in looks. If you need stability and power the best option is the FZ. If speed is on your look out then the best option is the Pulsar. It has speeds and power which can burn serious rubber.

i wanna buy a bike . . suggest between fz-s,unicorn dazzler,pulsar150,apache !
good looks, ride comfort n reasonable mileage of 40+ are my priorities…
waitin fa ur reply
give me two choices as ma parents r almost anti-pulsar !
also temme if fz-s can have a lifetime of say 6-7 yrs…
pls email me at lerish_lal@yahoo.co.in

@Lerish
Its a good decision that you have given options to select. These options are preferred and a sign of good taste.
1) The Unicorn Dazzler is a good bike but not that great when it comes to performance and results. It is a pumped up Unicorn which comes in new body and some additional parts like rear disc brake. The COST is very high and not worth the value.
Since your parents are anti Pulsar then you can opt for FZ or the Apache……Well if you are looking cost wise, yes the Apache is cheap and fast than the FZ, if you are a heighten individual then the Apache will be bit uncomfortable, regarding economy wise yes it will deliver around 35-40kmpl like the FZ…The Power is quite more in the Apache as it is 180cc and has best features at a affordable cost.
The verdict is the Apache RTR 180 which is cheap than the FZ and fits in the mileage criteria with long reliability.
2) About the Fz having a long term, well i doubt since the engine is perfect but chassis and body parts are too delicate. Metal is mostly absent in the body panels.

I own a Pulsar 180 model 2010 Oct made. Have rode it 2800 kms only. If I ride it alone, with correct tyre pressure it gives me a mileage of 43-45 km/lit of petrol.
My friend owns a Yamaha FZS Jan 2012 model. Gives him 38-40 kms/lit of petrol when he rides alone.
Both bikes are good……..Yamaha has made a very stylish bike, although the Number Plate on top of the Visor makes it look odd. Also the bike feels very plastic when touched. Although the same plastic has made it lighter and thus maneuverable.
Pulsar 180 on the other hand has better looks. Although the grab rails looks sportier but lack usability.
The Gear Box in the Yamaha FZS is a pleasure, but Pulsar 180 it needs improvement.
Yamaha FZS has a monoshock absorber that is very comfortable when ridden alone. But with a pinion it wobbles at times, specially when u r going on bad roads.
With Pulsar 180 one will never face any such issues. Its superbly powerful and can handle any weight on any roads.
Yamaha spares are costlier than Bajaj.
Sitting position is much comfortable in Pulsar than Yamaha, specially if u have a heavy built.
Both the bikes cost almost the same, with a mere diff of 1000 INR between them.
