If taking a look at increasing fuel prices, decrease in air quality and the budgetary things, the all are indicating the auto majors in India to come up with ‘green’ vehicles.

Mahindra & Mahindra (M & M), Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, two-wheeler makers TVS Motors and Bajaj Auto and Toyota and Honda are the green prototype holders.

There are mainly two types of green vehicles: One uses batteries and it requires regular recharging. The other is a Hybrid that uses both the electric power and petrol or diesel. The second type vehicles are typically powered by the petrol or diesel when they start and after they can switch to electric power when they cruise.

These hybrid vehicles will be more expensive than non-hybrid ones (20 to 30 per cent). Ownership costs might reduce even more if the Finance Minister gives permission to Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) for excise 8% on such vehicles, against 16% for small cars and commercial vehicles and 24% for big cars.

The companies are also finding the other ways to reduce the cost. Mahindra & Mahindra, for instance, has said that all its future vehicles will include a hybrid options. A hybrid Bolero will come up with this features in three or four months.

The company’s senior VP, R&D global product development Arun Jaura added that hybrid vehicles need not be expensive; the architecture of the engine can be change to suit customer’s financial needs.
